A shade tree reduces summer cooling costs provides bird habitat and adds property value. For small yards choose trees that provide good canopy without overwhelming the space.
Japanese Maple
Most cultivars reach 15 to 25 feet with a graceful spreading canopy. Foliage ranges from deep red to bright green with spectacular fall color. They prefer partial shade and well-drained acidic soil.
Crape Myrtle
Crape myrtles provide summer flowers attractive bark and fall color. Choose varieties maturing at 15 to 20 feet for small yards. They thrive in full sun and tolerate heat and drought.
Dogwood
Flowering dogwoods reach 20 to 30 feet with horizontal branching. Spring flowers are spectacular and red berries feed birds in fall. Kousa dogwood offers better disease resistance.
Eastern Redbud
Redbuds burst with pink-purple flowers in early spring. They reach 20 to 30 feet and tolerate various soil conditions. Heart-shaped leaves provide light dappled shade.
Planting Tips
Plant at least 10 feet from foundations and 15 feet from power lines. Dig the hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper. Water deeply weekly for the first two growing seasons.
